How the GoBoat Harbour Tour Works

Arrive early, a five-minute safety briefing, then 55 minutes on the water with a captain who guides.

  1. Pick your slot

Book from $31 per person with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Choose an early slot for calm water or an evening one for low summer light.

  2. Arrive 15 minutes early

The tour starts and ends at GoBoat on Islands Brygge 10. The listing asks you to arrive 15 minutes before departure.

  3. Safety briefing

A five-minute safety briefing comes first. Life vests are included, and you can buy a soda, wine, beer or water on arrival.

  4. 55 minutes on the water

Your captain sails and guides in English and Danish, past Nyhavn, Amalienborg, the Opera House, the Børsen building site and Christianshavn, with no more than 9 guests aboard.

When to Go

The Best Time for a Copenhagen Canal Tour

Time of day, month, crowds and rain, and the tours that fit each.

The best time for a Copenhagen canal tour is a weekday between late May and early September, either on one of the first boats of the morning or on a summer evening, when the low sun lights the facades between about 20:30 and 22:30. Mornings are the calm slot; evenings give the best light. For either, a small boat makes the hour count: the GoBoat Electric Canal Tour with live guide & hygge takes no more than 9 guests, costs from $31 per person on the dates we checked in October 2026, and its captain guides in English and Danish.

What time of day is best for a canal tour?

Go early for calm and late for light. The first departures are the quietest: Stromma’s Canal Cruise with Guide starts at 09:30 from 30 May to 20 September and at 10:00 the rest of the year, and GoBoat’s site lists its harbour tours from 09:45, about every half hour.

For golden hour you need a summer evening. From May to July the evening light runs from roughly 20:30 to 22:30, and the latest sunset of 2026 was about 21:58 around 24 June. Stromma’s last summer departures leave Nyhavn between 19:30 and 21:00 and Ved Stranden between 18:30 and 19:30. GoBoat says its last 1-hour harbour tour returns at 20:45. A self-drive GoBoat rental is open daily from 11:00 to sunset, which makes it the one way on this site to stay out until the sun goes down. It costs $90 per boat for an hour for up to 8 people.

From October the day closes early, and by mid-December the sun sets at about 15:36. Afternoon departures then run in golden hour or after dark; our winter guide covers that season.

Which month is best for a Copenhagen canal tour?

June to August are the warmest months, May has the most sunshine, and August is the wettest. Temperatures and rainfall below are DMI’s 1991–2020 averages for central Copenhagen; daylight and sunset are for the 21st of each month in 2026.

The longest evenings of the year fall in late May and June. September is still mild at an average high of 18.2 °C. Most tours sail all year, but some do not: the Kayak Tour in Copenhagen Harbor is closed from 1 October to 31 March, and Hey Captain’s Old Canals and Hidden Gems Social Boat Tour next appears on GetYourGuide on 19 March 2027.

When are the canal boats most crowded?

Summer weekends and festival weeks are the busiest. In 2026 the Copenhagen Jazz Festival filled the city from 3 to 12 July with about 1,000 concerts, and Distortion ran street parties from 3 to 7 June. The port also expects about 312 cruise ship calls in 2026. Culture Night, Kulturnatten, falls on Friday 9 October 2026.

To dodge the crowd, sail on a weekday morning and book ahead. A small boat also changes the feel of a busy day. The large Stromma open boats seat 168; GoBoat’s guided tour takes 9, and Stromma’s Exclusive Guided Boat Tour has 12 seats, from $42 per person.

What if it rains on the day?

Go anyway, on a covered boat. Stromma’s classic tour hands out rain ponchos and uses covered, heated boats in the colder months. The Classic Canal Tour & The Harbour is on a covered boat for 1 hour 45 minutes, from $37 per person. The Sip & Sail Canal Cruise is covered too, with windows that open when the sun comes back; see our drinks guide.

Most tours on this site have free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so you can book a fine-looking day and move it if the forecast turns. Our what to expect guide covers seating and what to wear on board.

"Amazing trip down the river, we arrived 45 mins early and our guide said he could take us immediately - we were the only ones on the trip so had personal attention, the guide was so informative and knew every answer to our questions, I would highly recommend this boat trip."

Henrietta United Kingdom

"A tour well worth doing. We had already walked all around Copenhagen but this boat trip showed it in a different light and we really enjoyed it."

Katrina Australia

"I had a wonderful time on the GoBoat electric boat tour in Copenhagen. The relaxed pace made it such a lovely way to see the city from the water without feeling rushed. Our young guide was friendly, engaging and clearly very knowledgeable, sharing lots of interesting facts and stories in such an easy-going way. The beautiful weather certainly added to the experience, but it was the calm atmosphere and excellent guide that really made the trip special. A great way to spend an hour."

Lisa United Kingdom

"Our charming guide boated us through the canals, giving insight into the Danish culture vulture and pointing out lovely landmarks. We enjoyed thoroughly!"

Genevieve United States

"Marcus provided a great tour of the canals. I ended up being the only person booked on so it was special to have a private experience. He was very laid back but really informative and gave me some good recommendations for my time in the city. Would recommend to anyone visiting."

Niamh Brigid United Kingdom

"Very relaxing tour - nice small group and lovely to see Copenhagen from the water"

Julie United Kingdom

"It was a rainy day, but we still had a lot of fun. Easy and educational. Great way to see Copenhagen, especially if you’re there only a short while. Our guide was only 16, but so professional and so knowledgeable!"
