How the Exclusive Guided Boat Tour Works

A small, quiet electric boat, a guide you can ask questions, and heat on board when it is cold.

  1. Book a daylight slot

Book from $42 per person with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. In December the sun sets around 15:36, so pick an early afternoon departure for the light.

  2. Step aboard

There are a few steps to get into the boat, and only 12 seats. Dogs are not allowed on this tour, and it is not suitable for wheelchair users.

  3. Heated seats and blankets

In winter the seats are heated and blankets are on board. The tour runs rain or shine.

  4. A live guide

Your guide talks in English and Danish and takes questions along the way, through the canals and the harbour past old and new buildings.

Winter Guide

A Copenhagen Canal Tour in Winter

Which boats sail, the Christmas cruises, short days and what to wear.

Yes, you can take a canal tour in Copenhagen in winter, and the most comfortable way is Stromma’s Exclusive Guided Boat Tour: a 12-seat electric boat with heated seats and blankets in winter and a live guide in English and Danish, from $42 per person on the dates we checked in October 2026. On a budget, the Canal Cruise with Guide sails all year on covered, heated boats from $24. Book a departure before mid-afternoon, because in December the sun sets at about 15:36.

Which canal tours run in winter?

Stromma’s boats keep sailing; several smaller operators stop or slow down. This is the picture for November to March as of October 2026.

The safest winter bookings are the two Stromma tours at the top. Our breakdown of the classic cruise covers its route from Ved Stranden 26.

Is there a Christmas canal tour in Copenhagen?

Yes. Stromma’s Christmas Canal Tour sails on Saturdays from 7 November to 19 December 2026 from Ved Stranden 26. It lasts 1 hour 30 minutes, costs DKK 339 (normally DKK 399), and comes with drinks and Christmas snacks on a covered, heated boat. It is unguided, with festive music in place of commentary. GetYourGuide also lists it as the Christmas Canal Tour with Snacks and Drinks, a new listing with no reviews yet and a first date of 7 November.

Stromma also runs a Christmas Jazz Cruise on Advent Sundays for DKK 259, and Lucia Parade cruises on 13 December for DKK 299 and DKK 399. If you want a guide as well as the season, book the Exclusive Guided Boat Tour and pair it with a Christmas market on land. Tivoli’s Christmas season runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, the Nytorv and Gammeltorv market opens on 6 November, and Højbro Plads follows on 14 November. For a drink on the water the rest of the year, see our canal tour with drinks guide.

How much daylight is there for a winter tour?

Not much, so plan around the light. Sunset on the 21st of each month in 2026:

MonthSunriseSunsetAverage high
October07:5217:5412.8 °C
November07:5615:538.0 °C
December08:3715:374.9 °C
January08:2116:203.7 °C
February07:2017:264.1 °C

From mid-November to January the evening golden hour starts between about 14:20 and 15:15. Stromma’s classic tour runs until about 16:50, so a mid-afternoon departure catches low winter sun or the city lights after dark. Temperatures are DMI’s 1991–2020 averages for central Copenhagen. Our best time guide has the full year.

What should you wear on a winter canal tour?

Dress for being still in the cold, not for walking. Bring a warm coat, a hat, gloves and a scarf, because the wind on the water feels colder than the streets, even on a covered boat. Heated seats and blankets help on the Exclusive Guided Boat Tour, and Stromma’s covered boats are heated. Leave the pram behind: Stromma does not allow prams on board. Our what to expect guide covers seating, bridges and accessibility.

Which winter tour should you book?
