Departure Guide

Canal Tours From Nyhavn and Nearby

Who sails from where, what it costs at each dock, and when the boats run.

Two operators sail canal tours from Nyhavn itself: Stromma from Nyhavn 3 and the Netto boats from their dock in Nyhavn by Heibergsgade. If you want to start in Nyhavn and also see the rest of the city, we recommend Stromma’s Bus & Boat Ticket 2 in 1, because its canal tour can be boarded at Nyhavn 3 or Ved Stranden 26 and it adds a 48-hour hop-on bus. If you only want the boat, Stromma’s Canal Cruise with Guide at about $24 boards at Ved Stranden 26, a few minutes’ walk away, and may finish in Nyhavn.

Which canal tours actually leave from Nyhavn?

The boats you see lined up along the quay belong to Stromma and to Netto-Bådene. Stromma’s Classic Canal Tour leaves from Nyhavn 3 and costs DKK 169 at the dock in 2026. The Netto boats leave from the Heibergsgade end of Nyhavn for DKK 80, and Nyhavn is currently their only departure point; the old Holmens Kirke stop has no sailings.

Everything else leaves nearby. Ved Stranden 26, by Gammel Strand, is Stromma’s other dock. Ofelia Plads, by the Playhouse, is about three minutes’ walk from Nyhavn. Islands Brygge 10, across the harbour, is GoBoat’s base. Self-drive GoBoats cannot come to you, because Nyhavn is a no-entry zone for them.

The Guided Boat Tour Through Beautiful Canals also takes in Nyhavn on its 75-minute route. Its listing gives Gammel Strand 50 as the meeting point, while the description mentions Islands Brygge, so follow your voucher.

What time do the boats leave Nyhavn?

Stromma’s Classic Canal Tour sails all year. From 1 October to 23 December it runs from about 10:00 to 16:50, on covered, heated boats. In summer, from 30 May to 20 September, the first boat leaves at 09:30 and the last departures from Nyhavn are between 19:30 and 21:00. That is later than at Ved Stranden, where the last boats leave between 18:30 and 19:30.

The Netto boats keep a fixed timetable from Nyhavn: 10:00, then every 40 minutes until 17:20. Their main season runs from March to October, the ticket office opens at 09:45 and there is no advance booking. Whether they sail between November and February is not clear from their own site, so check on the day. Our winter canal tour guide covers the cold months.

Should you board at Nyhavn or Ved Stranden?

It is the same 1-hour classic tour from both docks, so choose by price and convenience. The walk-up fare is lower at Nyhavn (DKK 169) than at Ved Stranden (DKK 199), and summer evening sailings run later from Nyhavn. Ved Stranden is where the cheapest online ticket boards, where the longer harbour tour starts and the only dock where the Copenhagen Card covers the trip.

Buy for the dock you plan to use. Stromma sells the two departure points as separate tickets, and its pages do not say one is valid at the other. The Bus & Boat Ticket 2 in 1 avoids the question: you redeem it at a Stromma ticket office at either dock and reserve a departure. Our price guide and Copenhagen Card page set out the costs.

How does the Bus & Boat ticket work?

The ticket costs about $63 per person and is rated 4.4 from 1,835 reviews. It gives you 48 hours on three hop-on hop-off lines (Classic Copenhagen, Colorful Copenhagen and Home of Carlsberg), with more than 20 stops and recorded commentary in six languages. The boat part is one 1-hour Classic Canal Tour. Pets are not allowed, apart from assistance dogs. It suits a first visit of two days or more, when you would ride the bus anyway; for a single afternoon the boat-only ticket is cheaper.

What else can you do on the water near Nyhavn?

Hey Captain’s Old Canals and Hidden Gems Social Boat Tour leaves Ofelia Plads with up to 12 guests and a captain who chats rather than reciting a script. Its season on GetYourGuide has ended for 2026, and the next listed date is 19 March 2027.

Nyhavn itself is worth the walk before you board. The canal was dug between 1671 and 1673, and Hans Christian Andersen lived at Nos. 20, 67 and 18. Our route guide shows what each boat passes after it leaves, and our GoBoat guide explains the self-drive zones.

"Everything was very good. I was able to board directly at the jetty. I would have liked the bus stops to be more easily recognizable. So I walked too much and didn't have time to use all three routes."
