Why the Canal Cruise with Guide Suits a Central Stay

It boards at Ved Stranden 26, a short walk from Nyhavn and the old town, from about $24 per person.

  • Christiansborg Palace and Slotsholmen, seen from the canal
  • The Playhouse and the Opera House across the inner harbour
  • The Little Mermaid at Langelinie, 1.25 m of bronze from 1913
  • Amalienborg Palace, home of the Danish royal family
  • The Royal Library and its Black Diamond extension
  • Børsen, the former Stock Exchange, now rebuilding after the 2024 fire

What's Included

  • One-hour canal and harbour cruise on a Stromma boat
  • Live guide in Danish and English on most departures
  • Audio guide in German, French, Spanish or Italian on some departures
  • Covered, heated boat in the colder months
  • Rain poncho if it rains

How the Nights Fit Together

Book the boat, then the room, and let the dock decide the street you sleep on.

  1. Book the tour first

The Canal Cruise with Guide has free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Pick the departure, then look for a room near the dock.

  2. Sleep near the dock

Ved Stranden 26 is in the old town by Gammel Strand, a 5 to 10-minute walk from Nyhavn. Christianshavn is across Inderhavnsbroen.

  3. Walk to the boat

Arrive at Ved Stranden 26 a little before your departure. In winter the last Stromma boats leave around 16:50, so plan an earlier slot.

  4. Back on foot

The cruise lasts one hour and ends at Ved Stranden or Nyhavn, both a short walk from rooms in the centre.

Where to Stay

Copenhagen Areas for a Canal Tour

Nyhavn, the old town, Christianshavn, Islands Brygge and Vesterbro, with the docks that decide between them.

Stay around Nyhavn and Kongens Nytorv if the canal tour is part of your plan. Stromma’s Nyhavn 3 dock, the Netto boats and Hey Captain at Ofelia Plads are on the quay, and Ved Stranden 26, where the Canal Cruise with Guide boards, is a 5 to 10-minute walk away. That tour is the one we recommend for most first visits, at about $24 per person on the dates we checked in October 2026. If you want quieter evenings, the old town around Gammel Strand puts you beside Ved Stranden itself, and Christianshavn sits across Inderhavnsbroen from Nyhavn. Islands Brygge suits GoBoat, and Vesterbro has the widest choice of budget rooms, 15 to 20 minutes on foot from the canals.

Nyhavn and Kongens Nytorv

This is the short answer for a first visit. You can walk out of the door to three different departures, and the Copenhagen Card’s included canal tour from Ved Stranden 26 is a few minutes along the water. The trade-off is price and noise: the quay is lined with bars and outdoor tables, and it stays busy on summer evenings.

  • Wakeup Copenhagen - Borgergade: a budget hotel with a private bathroom in every room, about 250 m from Kongens Nytorv, with Nyhavn and Strøget within a 5-minute walk.
  • Hotel Bethel: on the quay at Nyhavn 22, with family rooms, a continental buffet breakfast and a 24-hour front desk.
  • 71 Nyhavn Hotel: two converted 1800s warehouses at Nyhavn 71, many rooms with waterfront views, and canal boats leaving just outside.
  • Admiral Hotel Copenhagen: a 1780s warehouse on Toldbodgade next to Amalienborg, looking across to the Opera House, with Nyhavn a 5-minute walk.

Gammel Strand and the old town

Sleep here if you have booked a boat from Ved Stranden 26. The Canal Cruise with Guide, the Sip & Sail Canal Cruise and the 12-seat Exclusive Guided Boat Tour all board there, by Gammel Strand. The old town (Indre By) empties out a little after the shops close, so evenings are calmer than on the Nyhavn quay.

Christianshavn

Christianshavn is the quieter choice by the water. Christian IV laid it out in the early 1600s on Dutch lines, and its canal is the narrow one the tour boats slip through, under bridges as low as 1.9 m. None of the tours on this site boards here, so you walk to Nyhavn over Inderhavnsbroen, or over Knippelsbro toward the old town.

  • Hotel CPH Living: a boat hotel at Langebrogade 1A, with floor-to-ceiling windows on the water, a sun deck and a Danish breakfast.
  • NH Collection Copenhagen: on Strandgade on the Christianshavn waterfront, with city or water views, air-conditioning and a restaurant.
  • 25hours Hotel Paper Island: on Papirøen, under 1 km from the Church of Our Saviour, with a sun terrace, bikes and garden or river views. The Water Culture House is due to open on Papirøen this autumn.

Islands Brygge

Choose Islands Brygge for GoBoat. The self-drive Electric Boat Rental (per boat, up to 8) and the Electric Canal Tour with live guide & hygge both leave from Islands Brygge 10, and the Guided Boat Tour Through Beautiful Canals starts in the same area. The harbour bath is on the same quay. Most stays here are apartments; the centre is across Bryggebroen or Langebro.

Vesterbro and Central Station

Vesterbro is where the budget and mid-range rooms are. The Walk & Canal Tour meets under the clock in Central Station’s main hall, and the canals are a 15 to 20-minute walk, so it suits travellers arriving by train who want one boat trip rather than a waterfront stay.

  • Steel House Copenhagen: a hostel with private rooms that have their own shower, a shared kitchen and an indoor pool, 5 minutes’ walk from Central Station.
  • Andersen Boutique Hotel: about 200 m from Central Station, with soundproofed windows and the Kødbyen bars within a 5-minute walk.

Booking tips

Book the tour before the room if your dates are fixed. The Canal Cruise with Guide has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so you can lock in a slot and then search for a room near Ved Stranden or Nyhavn. Our price guide compares every tour, and the Nyhavn departures guide explains which boats leave from which dock.

Plan around the light. From 1 October to 23 December, Stromma’s classic boats run from about 10:00 to 16:50, and the sun sets around 15:36 in mid-December. If you arrive late in the day in winter, put the boat on the next morning. In summer the last departures from Nyhavn run until 19:30 to 21:00. The winter guide covers the heated boats and the Christmas cruises.

If Nyhavn noise bothers you, ask for a room at the back or choose Christianshavn. You give up a few minutes of walking and gain a quiet canal-side street. Card payment works nearly everywhere, and tipping is optional.
